Three hundred Washburn University students, staff and community members will participate in “The Big Event: Bods into the Streets” Saturday, April 14 where volunteers will go out to various locations to provide needed service at 22 sites in the community. The morning will kick off with registration, breakfast, and opening words from Mayor Bill Bunten at 9 a.m. outside the entrance of Yager Stadium (near the Bianchino Pavilion). If the weather is not cooperative, volunteers will meet in Lee Arena, Petro Allied Health Center.
Volunteers will then be bussed to their designated sites, where lunch will be provided. The day will conclude with volunteers being bussed back to campus from 3:30 to 4 p.m. The goal is to encourage college students and other volunteers to make community service a regular activity in their lives.
Projects will take place at 22 area community agencies including American Red Cross, Asbury Mount Olive, Boys and Girls Club of Topeka, East Topeka Senior Center, Easter Seals Capper Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Harvesters, Health Access/United Way Helping Hands Humane Society, Hudson Head Start, Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, Kansas Neurological Institute, Kansas Youth Empowerment Academy, Keep America Beautiful, Topeka Cycle Project, Topeka Rescue Mission, Topeka West High School, Topeka Zoo, The Villages, YMCA, and YWCA.
LinC, as the Center for Service Learning and Community Service, and Washburn Student Government Association (WSGA), Planet Sub, Target and Lowe’s are sponsoring the event. For more information, contact LinC at (785) 670-2117 or WSGA at (785) 670-1169.
