Mulvane Art Museum hosting summer classes for all ages

Registrations are being accepted for the Razzle Dazzle summer art classes for children and adults offered by the Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn University. Day, evening and weekend classes are available. Cost is $65 per person or $55 for Friends of the Mulvane members, unless otherwise noted. SESSION ONE June 11-15

Morning classes 10 a.m. – noon. Afternoon classes 1 – 3 p.m.

CLAY & STICKY STUFF! ages 4 – 6. Experiment with a variety of traditional clay materials such as earth clay and modeling clay. Then make your own modeling doughs, clay and floam to create even more three dimensional works of art!

ART AROUND THE WORLD ages 4 – 6. Explore our planet and create paintings, sculptures, masks and musical instruments inspired by traditional themes from many cultures. Your global quest will include legends and songs from around the world.

THE ART OF FELTING ages 10 – 13. You have used felt before, now make your own! Felting is the process of creating cloth by condensing wool fibers. We will visit the exhibition, Crafts National, to see how other artists use fiber to create their artwork! Then, you will make your own felt and use your material to create unique art objects and images!

INSIDE PEANUTS! ages 7 – 9. Learn the illustration techniques used by one of your favorite artists! We will visit the Museum to see how Charles Schulz created his legendary Peanuts characters and stories. Then, you will develop your own style as you express yourself through illustration and cartooning.

CRAFT SAMPLER ages 10 – 13. We will find inspiration from the Crafts National exhibition! Each day, you will experiment with a different technique and media to make original works of art!

 

SESSION TWO June 25-29

Morning classes 10 a.m. – noon. Afternoon classes 1 – 3 p.m.

BUGS & ART! ages 4 – 6. Dots, spirals, stripes and patterns! Bugs and insects are tiny works of art! You will create artworks in a variety of media and explore the beauty of bugs and their environments!

The ART of ROBOTS! ages 7 – 9. Learn contemporary sculpture techniques as you create Robot-art using 3D techniques. Discover how contemporary sculpture is created and its visual role in today's art world. You will use both additive and subtractive techniques and work with wire, wood, and recycled items to create your sculptures!

ART STOOLS ages 10 – up. Learn about famous artists as you create your own drawings and paintings in the style of your favorite! Then, design and paint the top of an ArtLab stool in the style of your chosen painter. Your signed stool will remain in the ArtLab, and your work will inspire hundreds of ArtLab visitors!

THE OREGON TRAIL & ART ACROSS AMERICA ages 7 – 9. Travel back in time to the 1800s to discover and create art works inspired by a variety of American cultures found along the Oregon Trail. Celebrate the rich history and cultures of our country in art!

ART SCIENTISTS ages 4 – 6. Experience how art and science go together! Invent slime, gloop and flubber! Experiment with color mixing! Paint with bubbles! See how the sun can make prints!

Let curiosity be your guide.....

ARTIST-TO-ARCHAEOLOGIST ages 7 – 9. Discover how early human beings created art to communicate! You will create your own paint brushes and paints, make pots from clay, design your artistic language, and more!

Then, you will discover ways that archaeologists look at artwork to learn more about our ancestors.

FOIL & METAL WORKING ages 10 – 13. We will visit the exhibition, Crafts National, to see how other artists use metal in their artwork! Sample the arts of metal repousse, foil sculpture and foil punching as you create works of art using a variety of weights and types of metal.

 

SESSION THREE July 16-20

Morning classes 10 a.m. – noon. Afternoon classes 1 – 3 p.m.

ART SAMPLER ages 7 – 9. Try a variety of techniques, media and materials to make original works of art! Draw! Paint! Sculpt! Print!

IMAGINATION STATION ages 4 – 6. How far can your imagination take you? Experiment with painting, drawing, printing and collage to make your artwork. Learn about artistic expression as you let your imagination soar!

METAL MOBILES ages 10 – 13. Create metal artwork that hangs! Investigate movement and balance! Discover the artistic possibilities of mobile art and use a variety of metal materials to create art that moves with the breeze. We will visit the exhibition, Crafts National, to see how other artists use metal in their artwork!

TIE DYE & FABRIC PAINTING ages 10 – 13. Create your own wearable art using tie-dye and fabric painting processes. Many artists use fiber as expressive medium. We will visit the exhibition, Crafts National, to see how other artists use fiber in their artwork! Note: Some shirts and hats are provided. Please bring shirts, bandanas or other wearable items that you would like to dye and embellish.

OUTER SPACE, ALIENS & E.T.s! ages 7 – 9. Imagine the art and life of beings from other worlds. Learn about our solar system and other planets, moons and universes. Then, create drawings, paintings and sculptures that relate to the beings that you design.

ART FOR ALL SEASONS ages 4 – 6. SNOW IN JULY? Explore the elements of weather while you create works of art inspired by our ever-changing atmosphere. You will make a variety of artworks using many forms of media and materials such as painting, collage, sculpture and more!

 

SESSION FOUR July 30 - Aug. 3

Morning classes 10 a.m. – noon. Afternoon classes 1 – 3 p.m.

HAND-BUILT CERAMICS ages 7 – 9. You will visit the exhibition, Crafts National, to find inspiration. Then, create vessels, sculptures, spirit rattles and other ceramic art objects using a variety of handbuilding techniques such as slab construction, pinch and coil methods and more! Some works will be glazed; on

other works you will use alternative surface treatments.

MAKE YOUR MARK! ages 10 – up. Investigate a variety of printmaking techniques to create multiple images of your favorite drawings and paintings. You will create mono-prints, relief prints and experiment with basic silk screen prints as you learn the art of creating multiple images from a single source.

ART & MUSIC ages 4 – 6. Paint! Dance! Draw! Invent! Explore expressive art techniques, create musical instruments and make art inspired by musical tunes, rhythms and songs!

FUN MESSY ART ages 4 – 6. Have you ever made an action painting, created art by throwing paint-drenched tennis balls or made art bigger than YOU? Try these techniques and other adventurous art activities as you celebrate creativity!

PAPER MAKING & CASTING ages 7 – 9. Explore the fine art of craft and learn the art of paper making and casting. You will use scrap and cotton papers to create unique artworks! Bring objects of personal interest such as poems and pictures to include in your masterpieces.

BUILD A BETTER BUTTERFLY ages 10 – 13. Use contemporary recycle/assemblage art techniques to create nature or technology inspired sculptures. Materials are provided, but you are welcome to bring recycled items from home.

 

TUESDAY EVENING CLASSES 6 – 8 p.m.

TUESDAY EVENING ART SAMPLER June 12, 19, 26 ages 10 – 13. Try a variety of studio exercises to develop your skills in drawing and painting. Use pencils, charcoals, colored pencils, chalk, pastels and paints to practice your techniques. Cost: $35 members; $40 non-members.

BATIK & PAINTSTICK FOR TEENS & ADULTS June 12, 19, 26 ages 13 – Adult. Experiment with Fiber Arts as you learn the Batik (wax resist) and Paintstick (oil paint stick resist) forms of fabric dying and surface treatments. Cost: $35 members; $40 non-members.

PAINTING WITH ACRYLICS June 12, 19, 26 ages 13 – Adult. Explore the basics of acrylic painting techniques as you learn about color relationships, color mixing, composition and content. For beginning and advanced artists. Instruction is tailored to your individual needs. Cost: $35 members; $40 non-members.

WATERCOLOR FOR TEENS & ADULTS July 10, 17, 24 ages 13 – Adult. Try many studio exercises to develop your skills in basic watercolor painting. For beginning and advanced artists, instruction is tailored to your individual needs. Cost: $35 members; $40 non-members.

TUESDAY EVENING HAND & WHEEL CERAMIC WORKSHOP July 10, 17, 31 Teens & Adults. You will visit the exhibition, Crafts National, to find inspiration. Then, create vessels, sculptures, and other ceramic art objects using a variety of hand-building techniques such as slab construction, pinch and coil methods! You will have opportunities to work on the pottery wheel to create wheel-thrown pots! Cost: $40 members; $50 non-members.

Your class fees include up to 25 lbs of low-fire clay, our standard low-fire glazes and kiln-firing.You may purchase additional clay or specialty glazes through Mulvane Education. No clay orglazes from home, please. No individual kiln time.

 

SATURDAY CLASSES & WORKSHOPS 1 -3 p.m.

FELTED BOWLS June 9 & 16 for all ages . (Children under 10 must be accompanied by adult.) Use the art of felting to create treasure and keepsake bowls! You are welcome to bring charms or special mementos to embellish your felted container. Cost: $25 members; $30 non-members.

BEADS, GLASS & RIBBON JEWELRY June 9 & 16 ages 13 – Adult. We will visit the Museum to see how artists featured in the Crafts National exhibition create their jewelry. You will use recycled jewelry, make your own beads, assemble cut glass and design your own unique wearable jewelry art. Cost: $25 members; $30 non-members.

CERAMIC WHISTLE WORKSHOP July 14, 21 & Aug. 4 for all ages (Children under 10 must be accompanied by adult.) Create a one-of-a-kind clay whistle! You will learn whistle making techniques as you create a fanciful whistle that you will embellish with designs, shapes, textures and more! Cost: $40 members; $50 non-members.

Saturday, JUNE 23, 1-4pm Visit the Inside Peanuts exhibition! Come to ArtLab to re-create your favorite Peanuts character, or design your own character!
