Governor Sam Brownback has appointed John A. McGivern to Washburn University’s Board of Regents.
McGivern, a resident of Topeka, is president and CEO of J.F. McGivern Inc., a residential, commercial and industrial painting firm founded by his grandfather in 1946. He currently serves as a Hayden High School PACE corporate board member and previously served on the board of trustees of Hayden High School, the boards of directors of the St. Francis Health Center Foundation and Hayden High School Foundation Board and on the advisory boards of the YWCA and Court Appointed Special Advocates. McGivern is also a graduate of Leadership Topeka and Leadership Kansas.
A 1983 graduate of Washburn, he currently serves as a director of the Washburn University Foundation, as a Foundation trustee and as a member of the Washburn University Lincoln Society. A former member of the Ichabod football team, McGivern was a member of the Moore Bowl Renovation steering committee and on the Ichabod Club board of directors. Philanthropy projects have included the John A. and Sheila McGivern Hospitality Center in the Bianchino Pavilion at Yager Stadium, John A. and Sheila McGivern Family Endowed Football Scholarship, The Whiting Field House Renovation Project, Yager Stadium, Sneed Track Resurfacing Project and the Dr. Jerry and Susan Farley Professorship in Leadership.
His term on the Washburn Board began July 1.
By law, Washburn University is governed by a nine member Board of Regents. The Governor appoints three members who serve staggered four year terms. Washburn University offers more than 200 programs leading to certification, associate, bachelor, master's, doctor of nursing practice and juris doctor degrees through the College of Arts and Sciences and the schools of Applied Studies, Business, Law and Nursing.
