Washburn University students, faculty, staff and community members will be formally welcomed by Washburn President Jerry Farley at University Convocation at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, White Concert Hall, Garvey Fine Arts Center, Washburn campus.
This event marks the beginning of the academic year, at which members of the Class of 2016 are welcomed to Washburn. Convocation also signals the start of the collegiate journey and ushers students into the community of scholars.
Convocation speakers include Eric Benedict, president, Washburn Student Government Association; Randy Pembrook, vice president, academic affairs and professor, music; Margaret Wood, associate professor, sociology and anthropology; and Richard Liedtke, executive director, enrollment management, who will serve as emcee. Debuting during Convocation will be Washburn’s sesquicentennial history video (part two of a four part series).
After Convocation, attendees will receive a Washburn sesquicentennial historical calendar (part two of a four part series) and attend a campus picnic at 5 p.m. in the Washburn Room, Memorial Union, where members of Washburn’s executive staff will serve food. Following the picnic the fun continues with WU Fest, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on the Union lawn, and Traditions Night at 8 p.m. in Yager Stadium at Moore Bowl.
