Welcome Week at Washburn, Aug. 16-20
As students prepare to head back to class Washburn
University celebrates
with Welcome Week, Aug. 16-20, a week of activities to help
prepare students
for their first day of school on Aug. 20.
Thursday,
Aug. 16
9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Move-Crew
- Living Learning Center, Washburn Village,
Kuehne and West Halls. Washburn students, student
organizations, faculty and staff, and community groups, will
roll up their sleeves to help students move into their
university homes.
- 10 to 11 a.m. – Jerry Farley, Washburn
president; Susan Farley, Washburn’s first lady; and the
Ichabod mascot will join the Move Crew at Living Learning
Center
7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Rock the Rec, Student
Recreation and
Wellness Center
- Students will participate in the Fitness
Frenzy, knock-out basketball shooting contest, volleyball
serve and rock climbing.
Friday,
Aug. 17
8:30-10 a.m., Washburn Run/Walk, starts at
Student
Recreation and Wellness Center
- Washburn students will join the Washburn
community interested in exercise for a 20-30 minute walk or
run.
8-9 p.m., Dash for Dollars
- Ever wonder what you would do with $500?
Students spend the evening with new Washburn friends and
have the chance to win $500 by participating in an activity
and a chance to go into the Cash Cube.
Saturday,
Aug. 18
1 to 3 p.m., Bods on the Town, Students will
meet in the
lobby, Living Learning Center
- Students will take a tour of Downtown
Topeka, Lake Shawnee and the North Topeka Arts District.
Plus they will hear about what Topeka has to offer students

7 to 10 p.m., 12th Annual Casino
Night, Washburn
Room, Memorial Union
- It’s the excitement and glamour of Las Vegas without leaving Kansas.
The event is free to WU students with a WU ID. Participants
will have the opportunity to play casino games such as
blackjack, craps, roulette and Texas Hold 'em poker.

6 to 7 p.m., Sundaes on Sunday, lobby, Living

7 to 9 p.m., Big Screen Event featuring a
blockbuster summer
movie, Washburn A room, Memorial Union
Monday,
Aug. 20
11:30 a.m. Ichabod’s 214th
Birthday celebration,
main lobby, Memorial Union
- Join Washburn President Jerry Farley he
celebrates Washburn’s benefactor, Ichabod Washburn and one
of the most unique mascots, the Ichabod.
4 to 5 p.m., University Convocation, White
Concert Hall,
Garvey Fine Arts Center
- President Farley will formally welcome the
students back to campus.
5 p.m., Campus picnic, Memorial Union
south lawn
5:30 p.m., WU Fest, Memorial Union lawn
- The lawn will be turned into Washburn’s own
festival of fun. There will be games, music, food and
representatives from a variety of Washburn’s student
organizations and the Topeka community.
8 p.m. Traditions Night, Yager Stadium
at Moore Bowl
(Free and open to the public)
- Learn about Washburn traditions, including
the fight song, cheers and alma mater. Also hear from
Washburn coaches and watch the football team practice at the
conclusion of the event.
