Washburn President Jerry Farley announces annual can food drive Sept. 27

Competition CAN be a good thing! Washburn University President Jerry Farley, Barry Feaker, executive director, Topeka Rescue Mission, and Eric Benedict, president, Washburn Student Government Association will kick off Can Emporia, the 6th annual competition between Washburn University and Emporia State University student government leaders to see which school can donate the most non-perishable food items to be given to area food banks, at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in main lobby, Memorial Union, Washburn campus.

The Can Emporia food drive will start Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Washburn Family Day football game verses Southwest Baptist University and conclude Nov. 2. The student government president of the losing school will receive a pie in the face at halftime of the Washburn football game verses Emporia State University on Saturday, Nov. 10. Cans collected by WSGA will be donated to the Topeka Rescue Mission.

Washburn Student Government Association will sponsor several events to raise awareness and participation in the food drive. Donors may bring cans to the WSGA office, lower level, Memorial Union. For a list of items to donate, contact Micah Offermann, director, public relations, WSGA.

The Can Emporia competition between WU and ESU began in 2007. Washburn has logged three wins; Emporia two. WSGA is celebrating 100 years and was founded in 1912 on the grounds of improving the lives of students on and off campus.
