In a
recent food drive, Washburn University collected 17,192 canned
food items to
benefit Let’s Help, Inc. and the Topeka Rescue Mission. The food
drive was a
competition entitled “Can Emporia” against Emporia State
University, to see
which university could collect the most non-perishable food
items. Cans
collected during Washburn’s 2012 “Can Emporia” campaign more
than quadrupled cans
collected in 2011. Emporia claimed the title this year by
collecting 39,458
food items.
One highlight of the “Can Emporia” campaign was a $1,000 donation from the Topeka Area Association of REALTORS®, Inc., who participated in the can collection with their “Realtors CAN Do It” campaign.
The Can Emporia competition between Washburn and Emporia began in 2007. After this year’s competition, Washburn and Emporia are tied with three wins per university. For more information, contact Washburn Student Government Association at 785-670-1169.
WSGA is celebrating 100 years and was founded in 1912 on the grounds of improving the lives of students on and off campus.
