Students enrolled in public speaking classes at Washburn University were chosen to compete in an annual Speak Off competition, Nov. 7.
Finalist for the competition, their hometown, topic and placement were:
Jillian Kincaid, Overland Park, Kan., “Chakras,” first place
Xinhui Du, Shanghai, China, “The Art of Chinese Cuisine,” second place
Kristin Onions, Shawnee, Kan., “Jana Mackey: Domestic Violence,” third place
Ashley Williams, Silver Lake, Kan., “Synesthesia,” fourth place
Erin Finley, Dodge City, Kan., “Energy Drinks and Their Effect on College Students,” fifth place
Xin Ding, Shanghai, China, “Confucius,” sixth place
Kincaid, also will receive the Nall Award, named after the benefactor of the event. Robert Nall is a 1990 graduate of the communications department.
More than 180 students are enrolled in public speaking this semester. From these, the top six students were selected based on their preliminary round performance, to compete for the Speak Off championship. Washburn’s communications department hosts the event.
