The public is invited to Washburn Tech’s 4th Annual Holiday Gift and Craft Fair, Saturday, Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Conference Center at Washburn Tech. Admission is free. A variety of unique hand-crafted, manufactured, and other items will be available from small businesses. Gift selections including fine woodturning, hand crafted jewelry, tools designed for women, doll and baby items, games, kitchen items and accessories, and much more will be available. Pictures with Santa will be available for $5.00.
The Fair is a benefit for the Washburn Tech SkillsUSA chapter. Skills USA is a national, non-profit organization serving post-secondary and high school students who are preparing for careers in technical, trade, and skilled service occupations. In 2012 over 80 Washburn Tech students participated at a cost of over $350 per student.
In 2012, 47 Washburn Tech SkillsUSA students won 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place awards in their competitions at the state level. Eleven students qualified to proceed to national competitions to compete with 5,500 of their peers. Seven Washburn Tech students placed in the top 25 in their field nationally and were awarded two silver medals, two 6th place, an eleventh, nineteen, and a 25th place awards.
Washburn Tech offers 25 technical programs, most of which are about 48 credits in length, in one of five divisions – Construction, Health Care, Transportation, Human Services, and Technology. In addition, short-term continuing education and custom courses are offered. Washburn Tech, which serves post-secondary students as well as high school students, has the highest graduation rate of any public technical institution in Kansas, 87 percent.
