Winners named in Washburn University Chemistry Day competition

Forty students from five high schools competed and enjoyed a variety of events at the 2013 Chemistry Day staged recently at Washburn University. 

Students competed in an examination prepared from the American Chemical Society National Test Bank and in The Chemathon, the Chemistry Quiz Bowl. Washburn students also demonstrated various scientific instruments used in chemical analysis.  

Top performers in the ACS examination were:

• First place:  C.J. Hopkins, Mill Valley High
• Second place:  Cole Clay, Mill Valley High
• Third place:  Mark Spicer, Hayden High; Evan Sutherland, Hayden High (tie)
• Fourth place:  Cody Schmitz, Concordia High; Chris Gillespie, Mill Valley High (tie)
• Fifth place:  Kassi Short, Hayden High; Greg Gross, Concordia High (tie)

Chemtathon quiz bowl winners were:

First place:  Mill Valley High:  Aaron Akin, Cole Clay, Chris Gillespie and C.J. Hopkins

Second place:  Concordia High:  Greg Gross, Cody Schmitz and Robin Daniels

Third place: Concordia High School:  Siri McGuire, Clay Boley, Nick Thomas and Kirstyn Dvorak
