Two awards for Washburn University online virtual tour

The online virtual tour on the Washburn University website has received two awards from national organizations.

Most Creative Use of Cascade Server, known as a Cassie, was presented at the Hannon Hill Cascade User Conference.  Washburn’s entry topped others for the most innovative production created and shared within the Cascade content management system. Cascade, a content management system, is a product of Hannon Hill and widely used by educational institution websites.

People’s Choice EduStyle Higher-Ed Web Award from in the category of Best Campus Map or Virtual Tour. EduStyle is an online community and resource for campus website designers.

According to Shane Bartley, Washburn webmaster, the virtual tour is different from the offerings of many universities by incorporating responsive design and not requiring Flash.

“If you have a virtual tour created in Flash, you’re not going to be able to see it on your iPhone,” he said.

Because the Washburn tour uses responsive design, it will lay it out on the different devices in a nice way. Within Cascade we can change it really easily.”

The tour, designed by the Kansas City office of Barkley-REI, includes videos featuring current students, photographs and text for each tour stop, which allows prospective students and their family members to experience campus before arriving. The tour’s content, including a map and several videos, were created by Washburn staff. Photography was captured by jones huyett Partners, of Topeka, and Peggy Clark, Washburn University photographer.

Washburn’s redesigned website was launched in May 2012. In addition to a new and updated look and feel, the site eliminated its use of Flash and uses responsive design, to be best experienced on smart phones and tablets on all platforms. In addition to the virtual tour experience, the site features integration of several social media platforms and a selection of pages presented in Spanish.
