Toys for Tots campaign surpasses campus-set goal

Toys for Tots red train logoWashburn University collected 873 toys and raised $1,232.26 to help Toys for Tots to brighten the holiday for local children.

Washburn’s five-week collection effort surpassed the goal set by campus committee of 550 toys and $1,100 in monetary donations thanks to the special efforts of students at Washburn and Washburn Tech.

For the first time, Washburn Tech hosted a Toy Build day on Dec. 7 that brought out local Boy Scouts, students and other volunteers. Assembly-lines were set to allow for easy assembly of 500 wooden drums and the painting of step stools made by Washburn Tech students. Johnny Lemon, who teaches at Washburn Tech, hopes a Toy Build will become a holiday tradition in Topeka.

For the second year in a row, the Washburn Student Social Work Association and the Washburn Graduate Student Social Work Association organized a holiday bazar and donated the proceeds – $500 – to Washburn’s Toys for Tots campaign.

In addition to campus-only events, collection nights for both campus and the community were held at an Ichabod football game, men’s and women’s basketball games and at a Washburn Alumni Association After Hours social. Washburn would like to thank the community members who supported the local Toys for Tots effort at one of these events or elsewhere this holiday season.
