Orientation begins the Ichabod experience for many

Spots remain at four new student orientation sessions to be held in June. Encourage the future Ichabods you know to sign up today.

Orientation includes course registration for the fall semester, being issued a student ID, known at Washburn as an iCard, several workshop sessions on aspects of life as a student including financial aid, the residence halls and ways to get involved on campus, lunch with faculty and staff and the chance to visit with an academic advisor and faculty members from the student’s area of interest.

There are specific sessions designed for parents as well during the 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. program.

“The later they get here, the fewer course options they will have,” said Mckinlaye Harkavy, director of new student orientation at Washburn. “We want to encourage them to come early.”

Each orientation session has the capacity to serve 115 incoming students and their guests, Harkavy said.

“They’re placed in small groups with peers and with the Student Orientation Counselors (SOCs),” Harkavy said. Those SOCs are current students who are able to serve as mentors and answer questions members of the group may not feel comfortable asking in the whole group setting. They provide campus tours and share their personal experiences at Washburn.

Any student who has been admitted to Washburn can register to participate in an orientation session online at http://www.washburn.edu/orientation. Check out a sample orientation schedule today.
