I have been teaching at Washburn University since the fall of 2008. Before I was at Washburn, I taught adjunct and as a Graduate Assitant at Taylor University, Ball State University and the University of Louisville.

Service Interests/Activities
I am the facutly Adviser for the Washburn University Trumpet Association, I attend all Washburn home football games with the Marching Band, I attend all pep rallys and homecoming events with the Washburn Marching Band, I attend several Washburn home basketball games with the Pep Band and I am the Facutly Senate Representative of the Fine Arts Division of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Career Accomplishments
As a soloist, Dr. Averett has been the recipient of concerto competition prizes and has been a guest recitalist throughout the Southeast and Midwestern United States including engagements with several High School and University Wind Ensembles, Orchestras and Marching Bands. Dr. Averett has been invited to participate in the National Trumpet Competition three times and is a regular soloist and clinician with middle school and high school bands. Dr. Averett's primary musical training has been in orchestral trumpet playing. Dr. Averett has performed with many city, regional, and international orchestras. Michael has served as 3rd trumpet with the Columbus Philharmonic, 3rd trumpet with the Marion Philharmonic, and section trumpet with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra. Michael has appeared with the Orquestra Sinfonicia of Monterrey, Mexico, the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, Carmel Symphony Orchestra, Western-Piedmont Symphony Orchestra, JCC Symphony Orchestra, Hickory Choral Society and the Fort Wayne Bach Collegium. Dr. Averett has also performed with orchestras from The University of Louisville and Ball State University. In addition to his orchestral career, Dr. Averett has performed with a variety of other ensembles such as the Derby City Brass Band, Old Crown Brass Band, Louisville Metro Big Band, America’s Hometown Band, Ball State Faculty Brass Quintet, The Central Indiana Brass and the Washburn Faculty Brass Quintet. From 2008 to 2011, Dr. Averett was a member of the North American Brass Band Champions, the Fountain City Brass Band; based in Kansas City, MO. Dr. Averett participated in 4 of the bands record breaking 7 consecutive North American Titles. Dr. Averett was proud to be a part of the FCBB as they were voted "Best Performance in the World by a Brass Band in 2009" and when they became the first North American band to win a major European Championship; The 2009 Scottish Open.
