Michael Hager received his MA and MFA at the University of Iowa with a major in printmaking and a minor in sculpture. He earned his BFA here at Washburn University. He has taught a variety of courses in the Department of Art: Design I and II, Introduction to and Advanced Printmaking, Sculpture I and Advanced Sculpture as well as a number of advanced and keystone classes. Although he uses a mixed-media approach to his work, Hager concentrates on two main processes: printmaking and sculpture. A Constructivist at heart, he explores many ways to combine the two with a rigorous trial and error method. One of these is the assemblage of a large number of individual units, such as woodcut prints or sculptural modules, into a large single artwork. This gives Hager the opportunity to explore numerous arrangements of these elements that in a piece that evolves over time and place; a change of location usually results in a new artwork.
