Gerald J. Bayens, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Criminal Justice
Gerald J. Bayens, Ph.D. has been Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Washburn University since 1996. He teaches graduate courses in research methods and corrections, while supervising master's thesis. He has taught interactive web-based corrections and juvenile justice courses across several campuses of the Washburn University system.
Dr. Bayens earned the interdisciplinary Ph.D. in criminal justice, political science, and research methods from The Union Institute. He holds a master's degree in criminal justice from The University of Alabama and a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Washburn University. In addition to his academic teaching experience, Dr. Bayens worked in the criminal justice field for 22 years as police officer, correctional officer, and corrections administrator. He is a former Director of Community Corrections as well as Director of Juvenile Corrections.
Co-author of Criminal Justice Research Methods: Theory and Practice (Copperhouse, 2000) and Law and Society for the 21st Century (Allyn & Bacon, 2001), Dr. Bayens is also well-published in academic journals having written research articles on jails, intermediate sanction, and juvenile corrections.
Dr. Bayens is a member of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and the American Society of Criminology. He is the recipient of the 1993 Washburn Fellows Award.
