CONSERVATION TOUR FOR WOMEN BY WOMEN

Saturday, June 21, 2008

(Registration deadline: June 6)

The Kansas office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture is sponsoring an opportunity to learn about conservation work that is being done in southeast Kansas. For more information, see the event flyer.

ACTIVITIES

Evening programs involving dinner, speakers, and/or tours are planned throughout the year. On off months, noontime brownbags are scheduled, for a chance to network and discuss current issues in science and work.

In Fall 2007 we participated in the Washburn/NOAA outreach workshop designed to encourage Topeka girls' interest in math and science.

HOW TO JOIN

Membership is OPEN to ALL WOMEN and MEN who support the goals of AWIS. Applications are online at the AWIS national website. Select the Sunflower Chapter; $5 comes back for use in our programs. Also notify the Chapter Secretary (contact below).

WHAT IS AWIS?

The Association for Women in Science is a professional society dedicated to achieving equity and full participation of females in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics at all levels. We are a Network, a Resource, and a Voice. For more information, visit the AWIS national website.

Nationally, the current focus is on:

  • Connecting, supporting and mentoring women in science at all levels
  • Nominating qualified women candidates for key positions and organizations
  • Identifying areas of inequity and building awareness of the gap
  • Influencing policy
There are more than 50 chapters in over 30 states. The Sunflower Chapter is the most recent addition.

Only dues-paying members may hold office or cast votes at meetings; however, the Sunflower AWIS chapter welcomes the general public at all of our program meetings and distributes courtesy event notification e-mails to interested parties upon request.
