Women in Science Day Planning Meeting

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

5:15-6:15 PM

The Celtic Fox restaurant, 118 SW 8th Ave, Topeka

We will be meeting to discuss Women in Science Day 2009. If you have any interest in participating in the planning for this event, please join us! Contact Karen Camarda for more information.

ACTIVITIES

Evening programs involving dinner, speakers, and/or tours are planned throughout the year. On off months, noontime brownbags are scheduled, for a chance to network and discuss current issues in science and work.

In Fall 2007 and Fall 2008 we participated in the Washburn/NOAA outreach workshop designed to encourage Topeka girls' interest in math and science.

WHAT IS AWIS?

The Association for Women in Science is a professional society dedicated to achieving equity and full participation of females in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics at all levels. We are a Network, a Resource, and a Voice. For more information, visit the AWIS national website.

Nationally, the current focus is on:

  • Connecting, supporting and mentoring women in science at all levels
  • Nominating qualified women candidates for key positions and organizations
  • Identifying areas of inequity and building awareness of the gap
  • Influencing policy
There are more than 50 chapters in over 30 states. The Sunflower Chapter is the most recent addition.

Only dues-paying members may hold office or cast votes at meetings; however, the Sunflower AWIS chapter welcomes the general public at all of our program meetings and distributes courtesy event notification e-mails to interested parties upon request.
