2003-2004

Year one of the Washburn Writers Program established a solid foundation for the continued growth of the program. Connections were made with the Freshman Composition instructors and activities began to bloom. Each semester, the Washburn Writers hosted and staffed a Writing Celebration Week. This consisted of several seminars on creativity and revision, which were targeted to the Freshman Composition students. Washburn Writers also hosted monthly writers' circles for Washburn students, faculty, and staff. The year ended with a presentation on our program at the national Writing Across the Curriculum conference in St. Louis, Missouri, in May 2004.

Year two of the Washburn Writers Program built on the foundation established in the first year by focusing the Writing Celebration Week activities of creativity and revision toward Poeticizing the Campus. This project involved having the freshman write about various sites on campus, as well as guerrilla poetry readings (which were videotaped) around the campus by members of the Washburn Community. The results of these various activities were compiled into a display promoting the university and its community of learners. This display/presentation was exhibited and warmly received at several events (the Washburn University Apeiron research forum, Washburn University Alumni Center presentation of student research, and the First Year Experience national conference in Phoenix, Arizona, in February 2005). Additionally, the Washburn Writers continued their hosting of writers' circles and interactions with various Freshman Composition classes.

Year three of the Washburn Writers Program continued the work done in the previous two years. The big project with this group was using film in conjunction with writing to explore diversity. Most notably, this group of writers used the movie, Crash, and then lead discussions and writing sessions with various student groups. It was quite successful, and the writers presented their project at the national First Year Experience conference in Atlanta, Georgia, in early 2006.

This year saw growth in the writers' circles and open mic nights. Writers were also utilized in many classrooms to foster writing and editing/revision activities.
