"Her Voice "
by Elizabeth Schultzi

Praise for Elizabeth Schultz’s HER VOICE:

Her Voice is a moving, mortally tender meditation
on the powerful bond that unites mothers and
daughters even in the most difficult of times. In
these perfectly tuned, precise, and vigorous poems,
Schultz weaves the arresting particulars of her
experience with her elderly mother into a
compelling exploration of familiar love and loss. Her
Voice is totally accessible and utterly human.
Harriet Lerner, author of Dance of Anger;
Dance of Intimacy

In creating a detailed portrait of her mother’s last
months of life, Elizabeth Schultz sanctifies the
transition from life to death, a reverse birth process.
Her poems celebrate the mysterious qualities of
mortality. This is a necessary, wise book, and I
appreciate the courage of the writer to immerse
herself in the difficulties and joys of this experience.
Her poems create a guidebook for us all.
Denise Low, author of Thailand Journal, Words
of a Prairie Alchemist

The poems of Elizabeth Schultz’s Her Voice tell a story
of the rich and often fraught relationship between
mother and daughter as her mother approaches
death. The images are clear as gravestones in
winter. As she looks at her mother in body and spirit, Schultz’s gaze is unflinching. In reading these poems, I was reminded of Dylan singing, “Let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late.” Schultz does not speak falsely at her mother’s late hour.
