Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: How long is the program?A: 24 months for general/vascular; 14 months for vascular only; 14 months for cardiac only. Q: When does the program begin? A: Cardiac and Vascular ONLY students start courses in May and clinicals in August. General/Vascular students begin courses in August and clinicals in January. Q: What areas of ultrasound is offered? A: We offer 3 specialties. General/Vascular, Vascular and Cardiac. Each student must pick one specialty to start off with. General/Vascular includes abdominal, small parts ob/gyn and vascular technology. Q: What if I want to pursue two specialties? A: Each student will start out in one specialty in the beginning and is welcome to pursue whatever other specialty we offer in the program after that. This is not a requirement, but is optional. Q: What is the format for this program? A: This program is distance education. The didactic component is online while students complete their clinical rotations in a face-to-face environment. Q: Will I be required to come to campus during the program, since it is distance education? A: You are required to attend our orientation session in August but there are no other required meetings. Q: Where are Washburn's clinical sites? A: Washburn has clinical sites sprinkled throughout the United States but the primary sites are located in Kansas and Missouri. **Some students are required to drive to their clinical site if availability in their area is limited. Q: How do I know if I qualify for the diagnostic medical sonography program? A: Only those with a minimum of a two-year allied health background in a patient care related field are eligible to apply. See program faculty with questions. Q: When is the application deadline for the program? A: February 1st of every year. Q: Is there an application fee? A: There is no fee to apply to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program itself. Washburn University DOES charge a fee when applying to the University itself. Q: How much time should students expect to spend on the online courses? A: Typically the student will spend 10-20 hours a week on classes. The clinical portion of this program is 24 hours per week for the entire program. Q: How many credit hours are required? A: 33 credit hours/year for vascular or cardiac. 56 credit hours/year for general/vascular. Q: Does the Washburn University Diagnostic Medical Sonography program grant a degree? A: Student's receive a certificate after completion of each specialty in the program. Many student's who wish to pursue a Bachelor's degree do so at Washburn through our BHS program. Click here for more info. Q: Is the program accredited? Q: Will I be eligible to sit for my ARDMS registry exams upon completion of this program? Q: How many students does the program accept each year? NOTE: All students accepted into the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program must be certified in CPR and have a background check performed prior to placement in the clinical facility. In addition, students must provide proof of vaccinations, complete a physical examination form by a medical doctor and provide proof of health insurance. | |
