Internships
INTERNSHIP PROCEDURES ALL OF THESE PROCEDURES MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO ENROLLMENT IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM 1. There are several preliminary tasks that need to be accomplished for the internship. In short, you should read the internship information packet (below) and become familiar with the forms that need to be completed. 2. Consider where you would like to complete the internship from the list of agencies authorized by the Criminal Justice Department (see list below). If you desire to complete an internship with an agency that's not on the authorized list, please contact the internship coordinator for approval. 3. Make contact with the host internship agency to see if an internship is possible for the time frame you have in mind. The prospective agency representative will likely want to interview you, so be prepared to answer questions with regard to your interests, time frame for completing the internship, etc. Also, most criminal justice agencies will conduct a background investigation. 4. Once you have agreement with the agency for an internship placement, the four (4) internship forms contained in the information packet (below) must be completed and submitted to the internship coordinator at the Criminal Justice Department. Upon approval of the internship coordinator, an over-ride for enrollment will be granted. 5. If you are required to complete the Washburn Transformational Experience and you have not previously done so, the internship is considered a WTE under the category of Community Service. As such, you will be fulfilling the requirements set forth for the Community Service WTE to satisfy this degree requirement. Consequently, you should declare your WTE at www.washburn.edu, (Student Tab), then contact Dr. Rick Ellis (rick.ellis@washburn.edu) to establish an appointment to receive a mentor and complete the “Activity Plan.” 6. Once you have received approval from the internship coordinator and declared your WTE, you may enroll in the appropriate number of academic hours for the internship and begin clocking hours.
