Human Services Addiction Counseling Program

Preparation of addiction professionals is becoming more and more important in response to the advances in research, which are guiding our understanding of how to develop strategies for intervening with people suffering from the devastating effects of both substance abuse and addiction.

Knowledge, Skills & Attitudes

The primary caregivers have traditionally been counselors who specialize in chemical dependency treatment. Our curriculum is designed to prepare counselors, as well as related professionals such as social workers, criminal justice personnel, psychologists, and nurses for effective practice based on competencies defined by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, which is part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the federal government. Students examine the theoretical foundations and research about substance abuse/addictions and learn clinical evaluation, treatment planning, referral processes, service coordination, counseling, educational methods, documentation and professional/ethical responsibilities.

Certification Requirements

Beginning August 2003, a Certificate in Addiction Counseling requires the completion of 33 credit hours. Students are able to enroll in certificate courses at Washburn while pursuing a degree. Upon completion of an Associates Degree, which includes specific course work, students are eligible for certification at the state level. Non-degree seeking students may also complete the same course work as students completing the Certificate of Completion, less EN 101 for a total of 30 credit hours, to fulfil requirements required in most states for certification in addiction counseling.

In addition to an Associates Degree, the following courses must be completed, with a grade of "C" or better, for certification in the State of Kansas.

HS 210 Introduction to Addictions (3)

Washburn University

Dedicated to excellence in teaching, Washburn University today is recognized as an outstanding public, urban learning environment. The emphasis on quality instruction has continued since Washburn's founding as a small church college in 1865.

Our educational objectives are to prepare individuals for careers and further study in a variety of disciplines, and for a lifetime of continuous learning. Our undergraduate open admissions policy allows Washburn to offer higher education to a diverse metropolitan population, but also requires the university to make special effort to help individuals attain their full academic potential.

With our reputation as a "teaching" university rather than a "research" institution, all of our faculty members are involved in the classrooms. More than 80 percent of them hold doctorial degrees or the highest degree available in their disciplines.

Because of our emphasis on individual instructions, our student-faculty ratio is 18 to 1, with a current enrollment of more than 6,000 students.
