Service for Sight

Protecting the gift of sight is one of Delta Gamma's highest priorities. Since 1936, Delta Gamma's philanthropicpurpose has been to stop blindness before it starts. We have funded genetic research, low-vision adaptive devices, tapes, Braille books and hundreds of life-enhancing programs. Our members have helped men and women in hundreds of ways to obtain independent living skills, increased communications and mobility skills.
Collegians and alumnae participate in service and fund-raising projects in hundreds of ways. They work with individuals who are blind and organizations which serve them.
Delta Gammas give more than 96,000 Service for Sight volunteer hours each year, one volunteer at a time, each leaving her mark on the world. The knowledge that "half
of all blindness can be prevented" provides the motivation for the
work Delta Gammas do. These projects offer each member, from the newest
member to the most elderly alumna, an opportunity for personal involvement
through service to her own campus and community.
The Golden Anchor Program was developed to assist Delta Gamma senior citizens, as well as other senior citizens who reside in health care facilities throughout the United States and Canada, by bringing joy to their lives in the way of personal interaction and the bonds of friendship. This program is an option for collegians and alumnae alike. Locally, collegians and alumnae support residents of Brewster Place Retirement Community by helping the visually impaired grocery shop, call their weekly BINGO game and provide goodies for various holidays.
The Delta Gamma Foundation provides a means through which Fraternity members
may work together in the furtherance of charitable, scientific, literary
and educational objectives. Incorporated in 1951, the Delta Gamma Foundation
includes such areas as Service for Sight; Scholarships, Fellowships and
Loans; and Programming and Public Relations.
The
Foundation is funded entirely by contributions from Delta Gamma collegiate
chapters, alumnae groups and individuals. Nearly all collegiate and alumnae
groups are involved in Foundation programs of their own. Annually, hundreds
of Delta Gamma volunteers provide screening for glaucoma and preschool
vision problems.
The Topeka Alumnae Chapter
supports the Red
Carpet Services of the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and other local agencies and individuals who need assistance. Please let us know if you know someone
or someplace in need of our help.
Please share with us
how many hours you have spent volunteering for our Delta Gamma philanthropy,
Aid to the Blind and Service for
Sight. We are required to report this information annually to Executive
Offices.
You may report your hours
after each volunteer activity or compile them and report them in
February of each year.
It is important to know
what type of activity you did, i.e. vision screening, read to the
blind, assist with shopping, etc., and for how many hours.
