WASHBURN'S
POLICY ON HAZING
On April 10, 2002, the
Washburn University Board of Regents adopted a new "Student
Conduct Code" that includes a policy on hazing which applies to all
registered student organizations.
The policy states:
"S. Hazing:
any action taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off University
premises or on property owned, leased or operated by a University-recognized
organization, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment,
or ridicule.
Consent is not a
defense.
In considering a
hazing case, it is not a defense that the person subjected to the hazing consented
to or acquiesced in the hazing activity. For the purpose of this Code, any
activity as described above upon which the initiation or admission
into or affiliation with a University organization is directly or indirectly
conditioned or believed by the person to be such a condition to initiation,
admission or affiliation shall be presumed to be a forced activity,
the willingness of an individual to participate in such activity notwithstanding."
Each fraternity and sorority
at Washburn has adopted its own policy that opposes hazing of students. For
more information about a particular chapter's policy, please contact the chapter
president and/or chapter advisor directly.
