II. Use the framework of the specific factors model discussed
in class to analyze the effects of the following three events,
one event at a time.
As in all the cases considered in class, the economy of the
country in question consists of two sectors, agriculture (food
production) and computers. Agriculture uses land and labor,
the computer industry uses capital and labor. Labor can move
freely between the two sectors.
While performing the analysis, focus on the event in question.
Assume everything else, including the prices, stays the same.
A. A decrease in the amount of arable land available.
B. An increase in productivity in the computer industry. In
other words, any given combination of capital and labor can
now produce more computers than before.
C. A PROPORTIONATE increase in the prices of the two commodities
(food and computers).
In each case, clearly state the effect of the event on:
- the amount of labor employed by each sector;
- the total output of each commodity;
- the nominal and real wealth of the capital owners, land
owners, and workers.
