Ann Hoelting is a Washburn Graduate who visits our campus on an annual basis to present topics to Washburn business students that will help them find excellent career paths in top-notch organizations. She is the Assistant Vice President over National Billing and Accounting at the Federal Reserve Bank in Kansas City.
On April 3rd, Mrs. Hoelting gave a presentation on The Interviewers' Perspective on the Employment Interview Process to two Washburn student groups. I attended both presentations and was very impressed by Mrs. Hoelting's depth of experience and ability to communicate with and inspire Washburn students.

Find new ways to accomplish things
• Overly aggressive or too passive
• Sloppy personal appearance (present trend is toward formality)
• Being inarticulate (verbal and written skills go together)
• No enthusiasm or being too chatty
• Too much interest in money and/or benefits
• Lacks strong handshake
• Indecisive or lack of focus
• Sloppy application (complete applications thoroughly and legibly)
• "Just looking" attitude
• Lack of knowledge of employer and field
• Cynical or sarcastic manner
• Lack of skills employer wants (if you don't have the skills you need to find ways to get past this, e.g. networking)
• Inability to provide specific examples
• Lack of preparedness
• Lack of perspective or lack of maturity
• Lack of involvement or reclusive nature
• Lack of punctuality (don't be late to a job interview, plan your route in advance)
• Practice and use role play
• Be proactive
• Assess one's skills
• Invite sponsors
• Network
• Develop a 60-second commercial
• Research employer (good time to look at pay and benefit requirement range) before the interview and be yourself at the interview
• Fall is the time when most employers recruit college students
• Use internships
• Use career service
• Sometimes you have to settle for less to gain some more skills along the way
• Have a footprint—know what you have accomplished
• Know your strengths and weaknesses, don't make your weaknesses a "show stopper"
