Information for Students
ISS provides a variety of services for students. Our primary point of contact with Washburn's student body is the Technology Support Center (TSC). Located in Bennett Computer Center, the TSC has staff on hand to assist with problems, questions, or recommendations to ensure student success at Washburn.
ISS understands that both new and returning students often have questions about their own computer systems, as well as the computing resources available on campus. This portion of the Information Systems and Services Web site aims to answer those questions.
Information About On-campus Computing Resources
Washburn has equipped the majority of its labs with Windows PCs. ISS has put a common set of software on all of these machines which includes the Office applications (Word, Excel), Internet Explorer and Thunderbird e-mail client. To see a full list of available software view the ISS Core Supported Software page. The PCs in labs authenticate through Washburn University Active Directory (WUAD) which makes it possible for students to log in to any computer on campus that is a part of Active Directory and have their desktop settings, files, shortcuts, bookmarks, and all other preferences "travel" with them. There are many labs across Washburn's campus for use, and some are open late. Find out more...

Wireless Network
Wireless Internet access is available in most on-campus locations. In certain areas, such as the Living Learning Center and Washburn Village where wired Internet connections are provided there is not wireless access at this time. In general, to access the wireless network one must possess a wireless ethernet adapter configured for DHCP. To gain access for the first time each semester, one must register their network interface with Washburn's Netreg system using their MyWashburn user name and password. Find out more...
E-mail
All students have access to a Washburn e-mail account. The e-mail address for a student, staff, or faculty member is the MyWashburn user name @washburn.edu. For instance, ichabod.washburn@washburn.edu would be the e-mail address for a student who's MyWashburn user name is ichabod.washburn. Find out more...
Information About Accounts
Two types of user names and passwords exist at Washburn. The first is the MyWashburn login information. MyWashburn gives students access to enroll, drop/add courses, e-mail, take online classes, as well as many other things. This login name is typically the student's first name.last name. The other type of account is referred to as the Active Directory (WUAD) account. This login information is used to access PCs in labs. Questions about accounts can be addressed at the Technology Support Center (Bennett Room 104) or by e-mailing support@washburn.edu
Services for Residential Living
Residential Living students have access to the Internet, phone, and cable services. Because wireless Internet connections are not currently available in the residence halls, students generally need a computer with an ethernet connection and up-to-date operating system and anti-virus software. Computer Requirements for Personal Computing
In general, any computer that has Microsoft Windows XP Home or Professional with the latest upgrades and some form of anti-virus software is the ideal solution for using personal equipment at Washburn or for online courses. Since no two computers are the same once someone begins using the computers, there are always various situations that can cause difficulty. The most important thing to do to ensure that a computer continues to function properly is to maintain it by installing all the latest updates.
Most instructors teaching online or using a computer to provide enriched courses will expect students to have access to a web browser, office productivity software, and Adobe Reader at the minimum. If there is any audio or video, Real Player is also required. Due to the nature of personal computers in general, ISS can not provide personal computer support. The Technology Support Center will do what they can to ensure student success on a computer but there are times when it is appropriate to have a computer professional inspect a computer if it is not functioning properly. ISS has an established list of minimum computer requirements. For questions about purchasing a computer system or determining compatibility, please contact our Support Center at support@washburn.edu or (785) 670-3000.
About Online Courses
Washburn is proud to offer 200 plus online courses to accommodate the needs for our students at a distance. Support for online courses is handled by the WebTechs, a division of Instructional Services in ISS. The WebTechs specialize in troubleshooting Washburn's course management system (WebCT) to ensure students can carry out all related duties that encompass taking online course. Due to the technical nature of needing a computer to do course activities, it is very important that students pay close attention to the requirements for personal computing. By doing so, many students will not encounter any difficulties while taking an online class.
Online course enrollment is no different from regular enrollment through MyWashburn. There is a Student Orientation for WebCT in the MyCourses tab of MyWashburn in the "WebCT @ WU" channel. Students are encouraged to view this orientation to become familiar with online courses. Any questions about online courses can be sent to webtech@washburn.edu or by contacting the Technology Support Center (785) 670-3000.
