Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

The Center for Teaching Excellence and Learning (CTEL) endeavors to promote, support, and engage in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) - the scholarly inquiry into the practice of teaching in order to enhance student learning.  Faculty and staff who engage in the scholarship of teaching and learning, just like those who participate in discipline-specific research, make their findings public for peer review and for the welfare of other faculty and faculty developers.

The boxes below provide information on publishing outlets, funding opportunities and professional conferences on teaching and learning. Although we do not provide an exhaustive list in each of these areas, we have tried to provide a representative sample of some of the more reputable venues for the purpose of raising awareness about SoTL at Washburn University and to facilitate the pursuit of SoTL projects by Washburn faculty.

Academic Exchange Quarterly
Academic Exchange Quarterly, begun sixteen years ago as a traditional publishing print-format journal. Currently, articles from Academic Exchange Quarterly are available in four formats: print, online, digital, and HTML version. Due to this journal's virtual organizational structure, AEQ editors and authors come from all fifty states and forty-four foreign countries.

Active Learning in Higher Education
Active Learning in Higher Education is an international, refereed publication for all those who teach and support learning in Higher Education and those who undertake or use research into effective learning, teaching and assessment in universities and colleges. The journal has an objective of improving the status of teaching and learning support as professional activity and embraces academic practice across all curriculum areas in higher education.

The Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-based Learning
The Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-based Learning (IJPBL) publishes relevant, interesting, and challenging articles of research, analysis, or promising practice related to all aspects of implementing problem-based learning (PBL) in K–12 and post-secondary classrooms.

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning is an open, peer-reviewed, international electronic journal published twice a year by the Center for Excellence in Teaching at Georgia Southern University to be an international vehicle for articles, essays, and discussions about the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and its applications in higher/tertiary education today.

The International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
The International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education provides a forum for higher education faculty, staff, administrators, researchers, and students who are interested in improving post-secondary instruction. The IJTLHE provides broad coverage of higher education pedagogy and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) across diverse content areas, educational institutions, and levels of instructional expertise. The specific emphasis of IJTLHE is the dissemination of knowledge for improving higher education pedagogy. Electronic distribution of IJTLHE maximizes global availability.

Journal on Excellence in College Teaching
The Journal on Excellence in College Teaching (ISSN 1052-4800) is a peer-reviewed journal published at Miami University by and for faculty at universities and two- and four-year colleges to increase student learning through effective teaching, interest in and enthusiasm for the profession of teaching, and communication among faculty about their classroom experiences. It answers Ernest Boyer's (1990) call for a forum to present the scholarship of teaching and learning. The Journal provides a scholarly, written forum for discussion by faculty about all areas affecting teaching and learning, and gives faculty the opportunity to share proven, innovative pedagogies and thoughtful, inspirational insights about teaching.

Journal of Legal Education
The Journal of Legal Education (ISSN 0022-2208) is a quarterly publication of the Association of American Law Schools. The primary purpose of the Journal is to foster a rich interchange of ideas and information about legal education and related matters, including but not limited to the legal profession, legal theory, and legal scholarship. With a readership of more than 10,000 law teachers and about 500 subscribers, the Journal offers an unusually effective medium for communication to the law school world. URL:

The Law Teacher

Clinical Law Review
The Clinical Law Review (ISSN 1079-1159) is a semi-annual peer-edited journal devoted to issues of lawyering theory and clinical legal education.
