Director of Orchestras - Assistant Professor


Washburn University's Department of Music invites applications for the position of Director of Orchestras beginning, August 1, 2020.  This position is a 9 month, tenure track appointment as Assistant Professor.  A completed doctorate is necessary for tenure-track appointment.


Required Qualifications: 

  • Doctorate in music; ABD applicants will be considered. (Doctorate must be completed by August 1, 2021.)
  • Demonstrated excellence in orchestral ensemble conducting at the collegiate level.
  • A proven record of professional conducting experience.
  • Classroom teaching experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Secondary area of musical expertise.
  • Professional performing experience as an instrumentalist. (strings preferred, others considered).
  • Experience recruiting students at the collegiate level.



  • Serve as Musical Director/Conductor of the Washburn University Orchestra and the Washburn University String Orchestra.
  • Provide leadership to all aspects of department orchestral activities.
  • Establish a successful record of creative/scholarship activities.
  • Contribute to the life of the department and university through service activities.
  • Teach music courses assigned to fit the successful applicant's qualifications and the needs of the department, including course in conducting and applied studio.
  • Conduct Washburn Opera Studio productions, as assigned.
  • Maintain an active level of professional activity in high school recruitment.
