The 2020 Washburn University Art Student Exhibition is a juried show that provides an opportunity for the public to experience the remarkable creativity, skill, talent, and intellect of Washburn art students. Due to the unprecedented circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, plans to feature the artwork in an exhibition at the Mulvane have been disrupted. We hope that this virtual exhibition provides a glimpse into the talent and work of our art students and the art faculty who guide and mentor them. Please take time to explore and appreciate their acheivements.

JUROR'S STATEMENT

I would first like to recognize all the artists who submitted entries into the 2020 Washburn University Art Student Exhibition. I want to congratulate the artists whose work was admitted to the show and encourage the artists who were not accepted to continue to believe in their work. It was my honor to jury this exhibition and the 133 submissions representing a spectrum of media and themes made my job exciting and challenging. The jury process is subjective and it is not an exact science, but it is a time-honored method for artists to receive assessment and gauge their progress.

For this exhibition I chose works of art that exhibited craftmanship or technical skill and application of design principles, creative expression, and presentation. The underlying concepts present in your works are equally important as the quality and manner in which they are realized. To effectively communicate creative thought to the viewer a combination of all of these elements must be present. The challenge in jurying work from digital images necessitated that I choose pieces whose excellence in technical execution was most evident from the slide. Thoughtful presentation and documentation of your work suggests that you are fully invested, and that you value your own practice.

I want to thank the students of Washburn’s Art Department for sharing their work with me and their supportive faculty. I am grateful to Mulvane Exhibition Coordinator, Michael Allen, for his kindness and support during this jurying process.
