Minor in Music or Jazz Studies
Students from any academic discipline can enrich their college experience through Washburn University’s Music Minor or Jazz Studies Minor. These programs are designed for non-music majors who wish to develop their musical skills, expand their understanding of music, and continue participating in performance opportunities while pursuing another primary field of study.
Music Minor
The Music Minor provides a strong foundation in music through a combination of coursework, performance experiences, and elective study. Students pursuing the minor complete 24 credit hours, including six hours of upper-division coursework. The curriculum includes participation in ensembles and offers flexibility through elective courses, including applied lessons.
Admission to the Music Minor requires a successful entrance audition. Students are expected to actively engage in the musical life of the department through ensemble participation and recital attendance, gaining valuable performance experience while deepening their understanding of music.
Jazz Studies Minor
The Jazz Studies Minor is designed for students who wish to explore America’s unique musical art form through performance, applied study, and academic coursework. Students may choose either an instrumental or vocal emphasis while studying jazz history, improvisation, and performance practices.
Jazz Studies minors participate in jazz ensembles and receive specialized instruction through jazz lessons, providing opportunities to develop their artistry and performance skills in a collaborative setting. The program offers students a comprehensive introduction to jazz while complementing a wide range of academic majors.
