Disabling Basic Authentication

During Summer 2022, ITS will be disabling basic authentication, also known as legacy authentication, in lieu of modern authentication for its Office 365 tenant. This is ahead of the Microsoft deadline of October 1, 2022.

What does this mean?

3rd party email clients (and others that tie into your Washburn Office 365 account) may need to be reconfigured. If you are using an Outlook client, whether on the web, desktop, or mobile, you shouldn't need to do anything, as you are already using modern authentication.

However, if you are using a non-Outlook email client, you may have to delete and reconfigure your email profile once more to initiate a modern authentication setup.

When is this happening exactly?

This change is happening for the whole campus before the fall semester. Faculty and staff departments are being done in phases (check your email for notice on exact date of cutover). Students will be cutover on Wednesday, August 10.

Modern authentication is supported in:
  • All up-to-date Outlook versions, on any platform.
  • Current hardware/software versions of Apple devices (iOS 11 or later, iPadOS 13.1 or later, and macOS 10.14 or later) support modern authentication natively in the built-in email app (Mail).
  • Current hardware/software versions of Android devices running the Gmail app support modern authentication.

If you are using any of the following email clients, click through to step-by-step instructions on how to configure them for modern authentication.
