
About the Summer Academy
Summer Academy is a FREE 6-weeklong residential academic and college-prep camp held at Washburn University for Upward Bound (UB) participants attending Topeka High. Incoming freshman to incoming seniors in the program are encouraged to participate. All meals will be provided.
Students may register for all 6 weeks and those who attend four out of six weeks will receive a $60 stipend. Students can choose between the Day Camp which runs from 7:30am-3:00pm each day Mondays-Thursdays and 9am-12pm on Fridays or can apply to live in the dorms Sundays-Fridays each week. Upcoming 9th graders for the 2025-2026 school year must apply and be accepted into the Upward Bound program BEFORE starting Summer Academy.
Academy details
June 2nd – July 11th 9am-3pm Mondays-Thursdays and 9am-12pm on Fridays (Day Camp Only Option-students may be dropped off as early as 7:30am for breakfast)
June 1st – July 11th Sunday Evenings – Fridays at 12pm (Residential Camp Option- only offered to upcoming 10th-12th graders)

Holiday schedule
Summer Academy will observe the following holidays:
- May 26 – Memorial Day
- June 19 – Juneteenth
- July 4 – Independence Day
Field trip Wednesdays
Summer Academy instruction will occur in the LLC and Plass Building on the Washburn University Campus. Students who attend Summer Academy are eligible for a field trip each Wednesday.
Field trips are FREE for Upward Bound participants!
