Historical Film Nights presents an offering for our WUmester theme of Community and Belonging - Barbarosa (1982). 'The Outlaw. 'The Outcast...and the Legend that was bigger than both of them.
When we think of community and belonging, we often begin with family. But how does that change when your family is trying to kill you? That is the plight shared by both the outlaw Barbarosa (played by county-music legend Willie Nelson) and his accidental sidekick Karl (Gary Busey) in Fred Schepisi's Barbarosa. Meanwhile, on the film-making side: how does an Australian making his American film debut choose to make his mark in the Hollywood community? By choosing for his first project that most American of genres, a Western: a picaresque tale of the mythic west set in the arid Texas borderlands. That proved to be a problematic choice, but the result, this cult classic, still delights.

Everyone is invited to Jericho M. Hockett's (she/her) first book of poetry reading and release party! Jericho will read from In the Bodies (Unsolicited Press).
In the Bodies is a collection of poetry for shapeshifting. The poems investigate possibilities of mutual transformation, as our relational encounters with others co-create meaning, poetry, environment, and even our bodies. What might we co-create when we press against the taught borders of body, of place, of time, of what is accepted as possible and holy? These poems press, inviting readers to get in the bodies of other creatures, people, and places- to taste what melts their tongues, feel their bone breaks, cry through their eyes, sense the world rotating through their dirt and updrafts, shift shape, and maybe sprout new growth together in shared gardens.
Jericho M. Hockett's roots are in the Southwest Kansas farm, while she blooms in Topeka with her family. She is a poet, social psychologist, teacher, forever student, and dreamer, most whole in the green. Some of her poems appear in or are forthcoming from Drunk Monkeys, Earth's Daughters, Yellow Arrow Journal, Coffin Bell, and Pilgrimage Magazine. Her shapbook "Rituals for Dissolution" is forthcoming (Eastern Iowa Review/Port Yonder Press). More works are always brewing. Instagram: @jerichomariette

Historical Film Nights presents an offering for our WUmester theme of "Community and Belonging".
The theme of "community and belonging" plays out in an interestingly double-edged way in George C. Wolfe's biopic about the civil-rights leader. On the one hand, Bayard Rustin is the key figure in pulling together the March on Washington in 1963, and getting Martin Luther King, Jr., onto that Lincoln Memorial-backed stage to deliver his "I have a dream" speech. The work required stitching together an alliance among diverse, often competing, Black civil-rights organizations to create a unified movement. On the other hand, as a gay man in an era in which no one was yet talking about rights for homosexuals, Rustin is an outlier even within the movement he creates. Rustin explores the interplay between these two themes in Rustin's life.
As students are preparing for spring piano recitals and competitions, Washburn Piano Day provides piano students grades K-12 an opportunity to try out repertoire in a semi-public performance setting and receive valuable feedback from Washburn University piano faculty and music major judges. A performance schedule will be emailed to participants a few days before the date of the festival.
Register today! Deadline 2/18/2024
