Qualify for a Tuition Waiver at Washburn

Not eligible for in-state residency status? Not a problem! Washburn University offers a range of tuition waivers from discounts on tuition to allowing you to receive in-state tuition, even though you may not be a full Kansas resident. Tuition Waiver for residents of Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma or Texas

Interstate Tuition Waiver

You can get an awesome out-of-state experience for an in-state price! Washburn University offers in-state undergraduate tuition for residents of surrounding states:

Dependent and Spouse Tuition Waiver

If you are a dependent child or a spouse of a benefits eligible full-time or part-time Washburn employee Washburn may waive 50-100% of your tuition. Eligible Employees are those who are employed in a position authorized to work .5 or greater FTE. Temporary, seasonal, and Student Employees are not eligible.

For compliance purposes, you must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the waiver:

  • be the legal spouse or a dependent (under the age of 24) of the employee as defined by Internal Revenue Code at 26 USC 152 (a)(1) & (2)
  • have a complete admissions application with Washburn University or Washburn Tech
  • have/maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA (includes CEP and all transfer work)

Benefit: Beginning with the Fall 2023 semester, dependent children and/or spouses of full-time benefits eligible employees may qualify to receive a 100% tuition waiver and dependent children and/or spouses of part-time benefits eligible employees (< 40 hours a week) may qualify to receive a 50% tuition waiver. Undergraduate courses at either Washburn or Washburn Tech and CEP courses via Washburn University (high school student) are eligible for the waiver.

In-state tuition for veterans and their dependents

Military Tuition Waiver

Active duty service members, veterans and their spouses or dependents may qualify for a Tuition Waiver based on eligibility defined under the post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act or other federal law authorizing education benefits for veterans and their beneficiaries. You must submit the following for review:

  • For spouses and dependents, evidence of a required relationship to the veteran
  • Evidence of veteran's official separation from the armed forces with either an honorable discharge, or a general discharge under honorable conditions
  • Documentation of the veteran's eligibility for federal educational assistance
  • Evidence that the veteran/spouse/dependent currently, or plans to, live in Kansas while attending Washburn
  • Letter of intent to become a resident of Kansas

Other waivers

For full-time employees of a state educational institution.

For Kansas high school graduates living outside the state. Must have graduated within six months of enrollment and have lived in Kansas within 12 months of graduating from high school.

Benefit: Receive in-state tuition

How to apply: Submit the resident status appeal form and materials to the Student One-Stop.

For students who have lived in Kansas for less than six months before attending Washburn, but work full-time at a job requiring at least 1,500 hours per year.

Benefit: Receive in-state tuition

How to apply: Submit the resident status appeal form and materials to the Student One-Stop.

For students who don't live in Kansas, but are the child (legal children,stepchildren or wards) of a Washburn University graduate.

Benefit: Receive in-state tuition

How to apply: Apply to Washburn and indicate on the application that you are a child of a Washburn graduate.

For students who are, or have been, in foster care. If you meet one of the below criteria and legislative appropriations are available you are eligible for the waiver:

  • I was in the custody of the Secretary of the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) and in a foster care placement on or after my 18th birthday.
  • I was released from the custody of the Secretary of the Kansas DCF before age 18 and graduated from high school or obtained a GED while in foster care placement and in the custody of the Secretary.
  • I was adopted from a foster care placement on or after my 16th birthday while in the custody of the Secretary of Kansas DCF.
  • I was released from a foster care placement subject to a guardianship under chapter 38 or 59 of the K.S.A. on or after my 16th birthday while in the custody of the Secretary of the Kansas DCF.

If you're unsure about your eligibility for the program you may complete the form and check the box requesting your eligibility be checked.

Benefit: Undergraduate tuition and fees waived (books and room and board are the responsibility of the student) through the semester you turn 23.

How to apply: Complete the Application for Foster Child Education Assistance Program on the Kansas Board of Regents website and return to Emily Shaw in the Financial Aid Office.

For graduate students who are residents of selected counties in the state of Missouri and who can document a cumulative 3.0 or higher grade point average. The eligible counties in Missouri are:

  • Andrew
  • Holt
  • Buchanan
  • Platte
  • Clay
  • Jackson
  • Cass
  • Bates
