Suicide Awareness and Prevention

  • Ask. Listen. Refer. (asklistenrefer.org) - Free online training that has information tailored for WU. It takes about 20 minutes to complete. It’s the easiest and fastest training on the list, and also the only one that has info specific to Washburn University!
  • QPR Institute | Practical and Proven Suicide Prevention Training QPR Institute (en-US) – $29.95 – This training is available online and takes about 1 hour to complete. After finishing the course, participants receive certification in QPR which is good for 2 years.
  • Find a Course or Instructor - Mental Health First Aid – Mental Health First Aid is an 8 hour, instructor led training that covers mental health awareness and intervention including concerns about suicide. The link provided is the easiest way to find virtual courses. Virtual courses vary a lot in terms of cost as some will charge for participation and some will have sources of funding to cover participant costs. Here in Topeka, courses are most often offered by instructors through Valeo. There is a higher ed specific version of MHFA. Connecting through Valeo is the best option for getting the higher ed specific version of this training.
  • Find a Training » LivingWorks Education – ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) – ASIST is a 16 hour, two day training. It’s the most intensive of the courses listed on here. The cost can vary depending on where it’s taken. In Topeka, it’s usually offered through Paraclete, LLC in partnership with the Shawnee County Suicide Prevention Coalition. The Coalition typically provides grant funding to cover the cost of participants who live or work in Shawnee County.
