Entrepreneurship Certificate

The Entrepreneurship Certificate can be valuable for any student on campus. It is designed for the student who seeks to be an entrepreneur in start-up ventures, operate a family business or work as an entrepreneurial change agent within a corporate setting. Companies want to hire graduates with initiative and who show entrepreneurial characteristics. Students who display entrepreneurial attributes will add more value to their companies, eventually start their own business, and make a big contribution to the overall economy.

Required Courses:

  • BU101 - Introduction to Business
  • BU260 - Business Plan Development
  • BU343 - Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Creativity
  • BU370 - Entrepreneurship Clinic

Business students may substitute BU406 International Business and Entrepreneurship Experience for any class. BU406 can be used as a business elective in the BBA degree.

Program Structure:

The Certificate Program in Entrepreneurship is designed primarily for students pursuing a bachelor or master degree offered by Washburn University.


Merit-based scholarship assistance may be available to students in the certificate program.

Kansas Insurance Certificate

The Kansas Insurance Certificate provides academic preparation for students who want to pursue a career in the insurance industry.

Specific Requirements:

The program requires four (4) three-credit-hour courses for business or non-business students. A grade of C or better must be earned in each course and at least six hours must be earned at Washburn University.

Required classes for the Kansas Insurance Certificate:

Level 1

  • BU374 Principles of Risk and Insurance

Level 2

  • BU378 Life and Health Insurance

And one additional course offered online at another Kansas Regents University

  • FINAN661 Financial Planning (Kansas State University)
  • FIN680 Retirement and Employment Benefit Planning (Fort Hays State University)
  • Property and Casualty Insurance (University of Kansas Edwards Campus)

Level 3

  • BU499 Internship (Insurance - Related)
  • or an additional Level 2 course
  • or BU366 Sales
